Throughout the last year, many people purchased second homes as a safe getaway from the challenges of the health crisis. With many professionals working from home and many students taking classes remotely, it made sense to see a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplifyingthemarket.com\/2020\/09\/14\/two-new-surveys-indicate-urban-to-suburban-lean\/?a=616460-ab6caa3a6a8f085fc17c865a33a506b4\">migration away<\/a> from cities and into counties with more vacation destinations.<span id=\"more-44608\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.nar.realtor\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/2021-vacation-home-counties-report-06-15-2021.pdf\">2021 Vacation Home Counties Report<\/a> from the <em>National Association of Realtors<\/em> (NAR) shows that this increase in vacation home sales continues in 2021. The report examines sales in counties where \u201c<em>vacant seasonal, occasional, or recreational use housing account for at least 20% of the housing stock<\/em>\u201d and compares that data to the overall residential market.<\/p>\n<p>Their findings show:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vacation home sales <strong>rose by 16.4%<\/strong> to 310,600 in 2020, outpacing the 5.6% growth in total existing-home sales.<\/li>\n<li>Vacation home sales are <strong>up 57.2% year-over-year<\/strong> during January-April 2021 compared to the 20% year-over-year change in total existing-home sales.<\/li>\n<li>Home prices rose more in vacation home counties \u2013 the median existing price rose by <strong>14.2% in vacation home counties<\/strong>, compared to 10.1% in non-vacation home counties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This coincides with data released by <em>Zelman &amp; Associates<\/em> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplifyingthemarket.com\/2021\/06\/07\/why-you-may-want-to-cash-in-on-your-second-home\/?a=616460-ab6caa3a6a8f085fc17c865a33a506b4\">increase in sales<\/a> of second homes throughout the country last year.<\/p>\n<p>As the data above shows, there is still high demand for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplifyingthemarket.com\/2021\/04\/15\/why-this-is-a-great-year-to-sell-your-vacation-home\/?a=616460-ab6caa3a6a8f085fc17c865a33a506b4\">second getaway homes<\/a> in 2021 even as the pandemic winds down.
